Tips for Clear Drains

Tips to keeping your home running smooth with clear drains

It’s an area that often gets overlooked but it is imperative to home maintenance.  Your home’s drains are actually one of the most important parts of our home.  You need to keep them clean and clear in order to prevent problems from an annoying clog to a major back up.  Here are some tips on how to maintain clear drains.

Kitchen

About once a month pour one cup of white vinegar then one cup of baking soda down the drain and let it sit for about an hour.  Then turn on the warm water and voila, the drain will be cleaned.  Vinegar and baking soda react to create foam that is a natural cleaner.  If you have garbage disposal add ice as well and turn on the disposal and warm water after the hour is up.

Another tip is to never put grease down your drain as in will build up and create clogs that are more difficult to remove.

Bath

Hair clogging up your drain is the main concern in the bathroom.  Use a mesh cover in your shower and remover hair regularly to prevent slow or clogged drains.  Your bathroom sinks can also get clogged by hair, makeup and soap build up.  Be sure to wipe out your sink regularly instead of running debris down your drain.

Utility Sink

Your utility sink has numerous uses but if it’s not kept clean it won’t be helpful at all.  If you wash your pets or clean household supplies in your utility sink, make sure there is a drain trap.  Also, remove as much paint or other household cleaning material from brushes with paper towels prior to washing; this will lessen the amount going down your drain.

If you follow these simple steps you will have smooth running drains!
